marmosetofdeath pointed out this article on IGN to me:

Top 10 Best XBLA Games
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/749/749682p1.html

I'm pretty happy about Clyde being number 6!

But wow, would I not have picked those particular games. Just one example out of many: How can Marble Blast not make the list when UNO made it?

The author (the honorable Mr. Perry himself) explains that they favored originality over familiarity, but somehow 3 (or more, depending on how you count) retro games made the list of 10.

But enough of my ranting. What do you think? If picking the top 10 is too much work, what would you consider the top 5?

I just can't find a part in me that likes Geometry Wars Evolved.

Where the heck is Outpost Kaloki?
And I don't know, but I don't like any of those retro games...

Hey, you mentioned reviews and that made me wonder what IGN's top 10 reviewed XBLA games are. This is the list:

Small Arms Fighting Action 8.2
DOOM Shooter 8.1
Cloning Clyde Action 8.1
Astropop Puzzle 8.0
Zuma Deluxe Puzzle 8.0
Geometry Wars Shooter 8.0
Outpost Kaloki X Strategy 7.9
Lumines Live! Music 7.8
Bejeweled 2 Puzzle 7.8
Wik Puzzle Action 7.8

Some of these reviews are pretty old, of course, and expectations change. Maybe they'd rerate them if they had the chance. Also, these represent individual reviewers' scores, I presume, not the group opinion of the editors...

No, they are the IGN's scores.
SF2 and Doom were ripoffs. You can get SF2 for much lower and with the online play (only for japan tho). You can also get doom 1 , 2 , and Final for $10. Or get doom 1 for free from ID. IGN doesn't even talk about this.

I don't like how they said that arcade games should only be $5. Ports I can see why, but not brand new games.

Yeah, I didn't like the $5 comment much, either.

$10 is too expensive? Wow.

If all Arcade games were $5, I bet we'd have a lot fewer games as good and as complete as Marble Blast and RoboBlitz and Small Arms.

(I typed all of this on Friday and then forgot to actually submit it here...d'oh)

Well, here's my personal Arcade top 10:

1. Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
--This was my first arcade purchase and is something I still play. Replayability, a steady learning/difficulting curve, solid visuals, and a cheap price tag make this game a force to be reckoned with.
2. Outpost Kaloki
--Clearly one of the biggest time-eaters on my list as I've poured tons of time into this one. For me, OKX is all about intuitive controls, never ending challenges, visual flair, but above all chuckle-inducing quirk-tastic humor.
3. Marble Blast Ultra
--Talk about a challenge...once you finish the game the "basic" way you are exposed to trap launching, easter eggs, double boosting, corner launching, and all kinds of crazy shortcuts that add depth and mind cramping challenge to this slick game.
4. Lumines Live!
--I know there was controversy about this game, but I am not complaining. I got great value out of my $15 and once I was skilled enough I went ahead and got the Advance Pack. $22.50 is not much to pay in this world of $40 (or more) repackaged Tetris games that still underperform the original. The visual style and audio work here is stellar. (Note: I never played the PSP version so I didn't have as big an issue with the pricing or the controls.)
5. Cloning Clyde
--A great sophomore XBLA effort from Ninjabee with the vision of John Kenworthy Nielson. No slump here despite completely switching genres and play styles. The humor is still there (kick those chickens!) as well as a unique visual flair. Gameplay is solid and even the "glitches" provide endless opportunities for fun and experimentation.
6. Hexic HD
--Simple and effective presentation along with a (IMO) better than on the PC control scheme, Hexic HD is a great puzzle game. Period. The price (free) doesn't hurt either.
7. Wik: Fable of Souls
--A completely unique control scheme within a bizarre tale about a frog-like creature in search of his family. Like nothing else...frustrating at times, but still ultimately fun and challenging.
8. Uno
--Fun with friends (and enemies). And it's even cheaper than the actual card version.
9. Zuma (Don't own it)
--Always thought this game was cool. Thumbstick is a very good input device for this type of game. Don't own it probably just because I suck at it.
10. Small Arms (Don't own it)
--Amazing visuals packed into a tight package. Controls seem pretty responsive and most of my personal frustration with the game is not because the game is bad (it's actually pretty damn cool) but because I personally am not that great at it.

Other than that, I don't appreciate them ripping into Time Pilot...I love that game. For the most part they are reiterating the community's sentiment, but saying $10 arcade games are "bunk-tastic" is clearly short-sighted since good games take time (and money) and those that make them should be rewarded for their hard work. (And have they noticed that the PC version of Bejelewed 2 or Zuma goes for $19.99?)

Obviously, you can see by my list that I am always interested in the *new* or original stuff. Some games have the nostalgia factor to some degree (SF II, Contra, Time Pilot, Robotron: 2084) but I focus most of my purchasing power of supporting new games.

(Disclaimer: I do own Time Pilot and Robotron: 2084 [Camera pack-in]. Other games I own, not on the list -- TotemBall, Texas Hold 'Em, Sneak King, Big Bumpin', Bankshot Billiards 2 [Live pack-in])

Lunar,

Thanks for the great post and mini-reviews!

I can see that you're in the category of people who think a $20+ game is still a great bargain. I agree with you. :)

Yeah...for me it's not about "cost" as much as "value". I didn't hesitate to buy the Collector's Edition of Gears ($70) because I knew I'd like it and I would get my use (read: value) out of it. But overall I'll probably have more hours of fun total in Outpost Kaloki X than Gears -- so the value of OKX is amazing (and I don't regret buying Gears one iota)!

Lumines is the same for me...it's a never ending game and I definitely still enjoy it so it's value is easily worth the $22.50. (I'll probably skip the "Artists Pack" though since most pop music isn't really my thing...but for some I can see how it would extend the value and interest in the game.) I mean heck, some people pay $15 a month to play an MMORPG. And good for them if it extends the value of the game for them...it's worth it to them. Ultimately your gaming choices should be about what *you* like and think is valuable.

/diatribe

Personally...I love tactics games...if only there was one coming out that I could spend my money on...hmm.

Yeah, most of the Arcade games are good value, but none have lasted as long as MBU, CC, and OKX.

My list personally is going to be:

1) Outpost Kaloki X
2) Marble Blast Ultra
2) Cloning Clyde (the top 3 are very close, CC takes it for Co-op, and MBU is just fun)
4) UNO
5) Texas Hold 'Em (both for play with friends...Texas Hold 'Em as a game wasn't done very well, but it is the only poker game on XBLA, and it was free)
6) Ulitmate Mortal Kombat 3 (the only game one of my sisters will play on 360, we used to love it on Sega Genesis)

Others might go in, but those are the ones I really like.

Haha, same here! What are all the developers waiting for? Where are the Tactics games?!?

Actually, at this point, almost anything in the Sim/Strategy genre would make me pretty happy.

Yeah, that category on the Marketplace does look rather... empty.

Curiously, that's how I discovered Outpost Kaloki X in the first place.

The funny part is after a year OPX is the only simulation/strategy on the marketplace.
